The Chinese government has begun a legal challenge against Pfizer Inc. on the sale of its erectile dysfunction drugs Viagra and Cialis.
Pfizer Inc. and its former European rival Lilly have been accused of illegally marketing their products to the Chinese market.
A Chinese government investigation by Reuters has found that the pharmaceutical company was marketing its products to Chinese markets, and promoted the products to U. S. consumers.
The U. Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday that it will consider a complaint from the Chinese government to determine the legality of the marketing.
said Tuesday it is filing a complaint with the U. Department of Justice.
The company said in a statement that the complaint was “a result of a lack of evidence” and “due to an incorrect interpretation of the law.”
Pfizer has denied all allegations.
In February, Pfizer and other companies that have promoted its products in the U. have pleaded guilty to violating the Food and Drug Administration’s regulations.
The company has not responded to a request for comment.
Pfizer shares have slipped $12.53 since the start of Tuesday’s closing price on Monday, down 5.4 percent. It is down about 20 percent since Tuesday.

A new study by researchers at Stanford University suggests that sildenafil can help men with erectile dysfunction (ED) by improving blood flow to the penis.
In a study published in theJournal of Sexual Medicine, researchers evaluated the effectiveness of sildenafil in men with ED. The researchers found that men taking sildenafil had a significant improvement in their ability to get and maintain an erection.
The study, published in the, looked at approximately 4,000 men between the ages of 18 and 41 who filled out a questionnaire before and after the drug. The questionnaire was distributed among the following groups:
The researchers noted that the group who had erectile dysfunction had a significantly higher success rate. The study did not find significant improvements in the ability to get and maintain an erection.
Viagra, known generically as sildenafil citrate, was first approved by the FDA in 1998.
However, other drugs have been developed for the treatment of ED, such as,, and, which are also known as PDE5 inhibitors.
The study authors note that these drugs are considered “potential erectile dysfunction drugs” for many patients.
